Mark Emory Graham Chapter

Mark Emory Graham Chapter

The Mark Emory Graham Chapter in the Diocese of Atlanta was chartered soon after the 1989 National Chapter meeting. With sixty members, the Chapter is now one of the Guild’s largest and most active, providing support to parishes not only in the Diocese of Atlanta, but also throughout Georgia, North and South Carolina, and Alabama. Our by-laws state that our primary purpose is to provide assistance to the clergy; we are an eclectic group that as traditionally stretched beyond Diocesan definitions to facilitate our ministry. The Guild’s presence is seen yearly at the Diocesan Convention in November, the Ministry Fair in March, and at other Diocesan services.

The Guild meets at our annual business meeting on a Saturday, normally in May or early June of each year, at a place convenient to as many members as possible. At the Annual Meeting, the Bishop of the Diocese of Atlanta, Patron of the Chapter, celebrates Eucharist and addresses the members and supporters on liturgical practice throughout the Diocese. It is a valuable experience for these committed lay ministers to discuss finer points of Church Liturgy with such a knowledgeable source. The annual meeting has become an event all look forward to attending.

A major activity is helping individual parishes to establish active and capable teams of Vergers, devoted to assisting the Clergy by relieving them of tasks which interfere with their Pastoral role. There is no one scenario which can apply to all parishes, or to the particular styles of ministers, so an individual program of training has to be established for each parish concerned. The Training Officer of the Chapter cannot perform this himself for every parish, and it is the current objective of the Board to make full use of the expertise which exists throughout this dispersed diocese.

Chapter membership dues are $15 per calendar year. Although members of the Chapter are encouraged to join the National Guild, it is not a requirement for Chapter membership. Vergers from other dioceses for whom no local VGEC chapter exists are welcome to participate with and join the Mark Emory Graham Chapter.  Check out the benefits of guild membership.
